Type 1 helper T cells are characterised by the production of interferon gamma, interleukin 2 and tumour necrosis factor beta. Th1 cells are involved in cell mediated immunity.

Several chronic inflammatory diseases have been described as Th1 dominant diseases i.e. multiple sclerosis, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis.
