The individual who has ingested corrosives will show the following sequence of symptoms and signs:

  • pain in the chest, mouth and pharynx
  • odynophagia and dysphagia
  • epigastric pain and vomiting

On examination, the anxious individual may show oral mucosal damage, excessive salivation and shock.
