Otoacoustic emission measurement is a technique based upon the observation that the hairs in the inner ear actually make sounds - technically, emissions - which may be detected with the aid of a sensitive microphone placed in the external auditory meatus. The sounds are absent in mild inner ear deafness.
The procedure is being evaluated as to its possible use for screening neonates for sensorineural deafness.
