Rupture of the spleen accounts for the majority of visceral injuries resulting from abdominal trauma.

Splenic rupture may occur immediately following the insult or may present days or weeks later.

Diseased spleens rupture more easily e.g. in infectious mononucleosis, malaria or leukaemia.
