Butyrophenones are a chemical class of major tranquillisers especially useful in the treatment of manic and moderate to severe agitated states and in the control of vocal utterances and tics of Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome.

They are potent neuroleptics related chemically to Pethidine but with clinical properties, including side effects, similar to the piperazine group of phenothiazines, producing severe extrapyramidal symptoms but mild autonomic side effects; depression has been reported.

In practice, Haloperidol is quite widely used especially in the treatment of acute stage of hypomania.
