The majority of diaphragmatic hernia are detected antenatally, normally at the detailed 18 week gestation anomoly scan. This enables appropriate referal and delivery in a centre equiped to operate on the neonate.

Postnatally the diagnosis is confirmed by chest radiology, which shows loops of bowel, or other abdominal viscerae, in the thorax.
