Presentation is in infancy. The characteristic features include:

  • severe diarrhoea
  • failure to thrive
  • loss of hair
  • a characteristic pustular rash over the mucocutaneous junctions, particularly the mouth, the genital areas and pressure areas

The onset of this condition is delayed if the child is breast fed.
