Vibrio parahaemolyticus causes a food poisoning 12 to 18 hours after ingestion of contaminated shellfish. Features include epigastric pain, diarrhoea, occasionally with nausea, vomiting, headache and fever which recover over a few days.
Treatment is by rehydration and antibiotics - tetracycline or chloramphenicol.
