Hamartomatous lesions

Hamartomata of the small intestine include the following conditions:

  • ectopic pancreas - usually seen along the antimesenteric border of the bowel or in a Meckel's diverticulum
  • hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia:
    • Osler-Weber-Rendu disease
    • associated with Turner's syndrome
  • neurofibromas and arteriovenous malformation - likely to cause symptoms such as obstruction, bleeding and intussception
  • Peutz-Jeghers syndrome:
    • polypoid lesions mainly reside in the jejunum, but can occur at any point in the gastrointestinal tract
    • intussusception of the polyps can give rise to small bowel obstruction
