Presentation of family problems

The following may be indicators of the existence of family problems:

  • frequent surgery attendance or fat envelope syndrome
  • frequent attendance of several members of the family
  • presentation of seemingly minor complaints
  • the difficult patient
  • abnormal or difficult behaviour in a child
  • marital or sexual difficulties
  • inappropriate antenatal or postnatal behaviour
  • alcohol or drug abuse in the family
  • physical or sexual abuse of a member of the family
  • psychiatric disorders
  • susceptibility to illness
  • increased stress or anxiety
