These are small, benign evenly pigmented macules occurring on light-exposed sites. Freckles consist of malanocytes which have produced an abnormally large amount of melanin but have not increased in number. They are more common in redheads of Celtic origin.

Sun avoidance is the best therapy since light-exposure is stimulating.
