The articular surfaces of the knee are replaced by anatomically similar prostheses. The femoral component is metallic and the prosthetic tibial plateau is made of polyethylene.

Correct positioning of the components is required to ensure normal mechanics of the knee.

Results have improved and are now similar to total replacement of the hip.
