It is essential that a full infective screen is performed in each patient with malnutrition.

The principle organisms suspected are Staphs - coagulase negative - candida, Streps, and E.coli.

Amoxycillin may be given to cover the gram positives, gentamicin for the gram negatives and metronidazole for the anaerobes.
