Allergic reactions

Urticaria and itching are relatively common effects of transfusion due to antibodies in recipient plasma against donor plasma proteins.

Less commonly, allergy may be associated with antibodies against IgA; IgA deficiency occurs in less than 1 in 10,000 of the population.

Overall, some allergic reaction develops in 1-2% of transfusions.

Treatment is usually with chlorphenamine (piriton) which also, may be given before transfusion if repeated especially if allergic reactions have been noted in the past.
