The complications of obesity include:

  • type II diabetes
  • hypertension
  • coronary artery disease
  • stroke
  • hyperlipidaemia
  • gallstone disease
  • menstrual complications:
    • early menarche
    • irregular menses
  • venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism

Obesity may exacerbate co-existing problems:

  • osteoarthritis
  • dyspnoea
  • dyspepsia
  • sleep apnoea
  • risks of child birth
  • anxiety and depression
  • the risk of general anaesthesia
