Choreo-athetoid syndromes

Choreo-athetoid syndromes are caused by pathology in the basal ganglia, and are distinct from the other principle lesion syndrome of the basal ganglia - parkinsonism.

Features include:

  • involuntary movements both at rest and during activity
  • a range of muscle tone findings
  • diverse postural abnormalities
  • normal speed of movement
  • no weakness
