Serotonin is believed to act on at least three receptors:

  • 5HT1:
    • cause pre-synaptic inhibition of transmitter release
    • inhibition of noradrenaline release peripherally
    • inhibition of serotonin release centrally, negative feedback
  • 5HT2:
    • post-synaptic effects
    • platelet aggregation e.g. during inflammation
    • excitation and inhibition in CNS
    • peripheral smooth muscle contraction
  • 5HT3:
    • central neurons targeted by ondansetron
