Features of infection may include:

  • pyrexia - often low grade and variable
  • irritability
  • symptoms of the original illness that the shunt was treating
  • rarely there may be erythema over the shunt itself

Most of these features are non-specific, and often reliance must be placed on a high index of suspicion and the parent's or patient's assertion that they are "Not right".
