The signs of early pregnancy are rarely sought when confusion still lingers about the diagnosis of pregnancy: it is easier to be guided by history and pregnancy test. Also, the signs of pregnancy are more difficult to interpret in multigravidas women.

Signs of early pregnancy include:

  • the uterus becoming larger, more solid and more cystic
  • the cervix looking lilac red on passing a speculum
  • the breasts increasing in size and feel warm; the areolae darken; Montgomery's tubercles (sebaceous glands on the nipples) become prominent
