Possible causes of intrauterine asphyxia include:

  • maternal asphyxia - lung, heart disease
  • poor uterine perfusion - shock, posture, vascular disease
  • disease and separation of the placenta
  • interruption of the cord, for example prolapse
  • foetal anaemia and heart failure
