Clinical features of candidal vaginitis

The clinical features include:

  • a common presentation is with irritation or itching in the vulvovaginal area
  • may be worse premenstrually
  • accompanying vaginal discharge
  • dysuria and dyspareunia
  • no increased frequency or urgency
  • the glycosuria of pregnancy or diabetes mellitus is a risk factor for candidiasis

On examination:

  • the vulva may be slightly reddened, oedematous and have a white discharge
  • there may be white lumps adhering to the walls of the vagina that have a cottage cheese appearance

Candida may colonise the vulva and vagina without causing any symptoms.
