An anaerobe is any micro-organism that can live and proliferate in an environment devoid of oxygen. Anaerobes can be divided into:

  • facultative anaerobes which prefer oxygen-containing environments but can survive in anaerobic environments
  • obligate anaerobes which can only survive in the absence of oxygen

Clostridium tetani is one example.
