This section deals with the commonly-fashioned types of stoma, how they are produced, and their uses. They include:

  • gastrostomy
  • jejunostomy
  • caecostomy
  • ileostomy
  • colostomy:
    • end colostomy
    • loop colostomy
    • Paul-Mikulicz colostomy
    • Hartmann's procedure

Laxatives, enemas and antibiotics are necessary for optimal bowel preparation before elective colonic procedures. Prophylaxis against deep vein thrombosis is also recommended since nearly all stomas are formed under general anaesthesia.
