The adverse effects of neuroleptics include:

  • anti-adrenergic effects:
    • postural hypotension with reflex tachycardia - especially after i.m. injection
    • nasal congestion
    • inhibition of ejaculation

  • anti-cholinergic:
    • blurred vision
    • dry mouth
    • urinary retention
    • constipation
    • precipitation of glaucoma
    • dry skin - danger of hyperthermia in very hot climates
    • tachycardia

  • neuroleptic-induced movement disorders

  • psychiatric:
    • restlessness and agitation
    • depression, which may respond to antidepressants

  • epileptogenic:
    • especially chlorpromazine
    • Pimozide is the safest

  • neuroleptic malignant syndrome

  • miscellaneous side-effects
