Acute aortic regurgitation may be caused by:

  • infective endocarditis
  • aortic dissection In these situations there is an abrupt volume load into an undilated chamber, causing acute pulmonary oedema.

Chronic aortic regurgitation may be caused by:

  • aortic root dilatation - Marfan's etc, also in elderly
  • bicuspid aortic valve
  • rheumatic disease
