As a popular textbook repeatedly explains, ECGs are easy to understand. However, many students find ECGs anything but easy, and are awed at the level of pattern recognition they see in their senior staff. Pattern recognition develops with time, but at the start, a methodical approach is what is needed to guide the student through the ECG and get from it the information it has.

There are many ways of getting this information; the authors have included here methods they find useful, but the reader may find they prefer other methods.
