Passive and active movement of the hip may be assessed but:

  • passive movement is usually less painful than active
  • the additional information gained from then assessing active movement may be slight

Procedure:

  • assess the passive range first
  • assess fixed flexion deformity by Thomas's test
  • normal ranges for passive movement in degrees are: - flexion (130) - extension (10) - abduction (45) - adduction (30) - external rotation } in flexion (40) and extension (40) - internal rotation } in flexion (50) and extension (40)
  • other tests as appropriate
  • consider whether to proceed to assess active movement
