Interferons have been used to treat:

  • HSV keratitis
  • rhinovirus respiratory infection
  • hepatitis; e.g. hepatitis BeAg carriers with chronic active hepatitis. Achieves about a 30% success rate possibly due to a mild hepatitis resulting in greater recognition of infected cells. The major side effect is that treatment may cause liver failure.
