Pendred's syndrome may be confirmed by a positive perchlorate discharge test. Perchlorate displaces non-organified iodide; radioactive iodine (RAI) may be given to the patient, time allowed for its accumulation, and its loss from the thyroid gland observed after the administration or oral perchlorate. Increased loss of RAI confirms the organification defect.
