Excepting aortic sclerosis, mitral valve prolapse is the most common cardiac valvular abnormality in Britain.

Prevalence in men is 2 to 12%; in women, 4 to 17%. With age, there is a reduction in the prevalence in women but in men, it remains unchanged.
