  • the screening blood tests are identical to those to confirm thalassaemia carrier status (see previous scenario).They involve a procedure called high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). This procedure detects most unusual haemoglobins, including haemoglobin S. It also measures the haemoglobin A2 level, which is needed to identify the type of thalassaemia. Prior to the development of HPLC, patients would have been screened using haemoglobin electrophoresis. As sickle cell and thalassaemia carrier states exist in all populations a unified screening test is offered
