  • in a low prevalence areas, as soon as a pregnant woman is booked into the clinic, if either of the couple originate from a non-North European country they should be offered the sickle cell and thalassaemia screening blood test (HPLC). In high prevalence areas all pregnant women should automatically be offered the screening test and partners screened if they are found to be carriers
