The following patients are at an increased risk of developing hyponatraenia:

  • post operative patients

  • alcoholics

  • malnourished patients

  • psychiatric polydipsic patients

  • the elderly - caused by a combination of chronic disease and concurrent use of certain medication

  • hypovolaemic patients

  • burns patients (1)
