The following conditions should be considered and excluded when making a diagnosis of an exacerbation in a COPD patient (1).

  • pneumonia
  • pneumothorax
  • left ventricular failure/pulmonary oedema
  • pulmonary embolus
  • lung cancer
  • upper airway obstruction
  • pleural effusion
  • recurrent aspiration
