The incidence and prevalence of HE are related to the severity of the underlying liver insufficiency and portosystemic shunt (PSS).

The prevalence of overt HE at the time of diagnosis of cirrhosis is:

  • 10-14% in the general population
  • 16%-21% in those with decompensated cirrhosis
  • 10%-50% in patients with transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS)

Minimal HE (MHE) or covert HE (CHE) occurs in 20%-80% of patients with cirrhosis.
