Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI)

Contain 3 sections which assess recent symptoms and is one of the most frequently used instruments to assess DES.

  • Have you experienced any of the following during the last week?
    • eyes that are sensitive to light?
    • eyes that feel gritty? .
    • painful or sore eyes?
    • blurred vision?
    • poor vision?

  • Have problems with your eyes limited you in performing any of the following during the last week?
    • reading?
    • driving at night?
    • working with a computer or bank machine (ATM)?
    • watching TV?

  • Have your eyes felt uncomfortable in any of the following situations during the last week?
    • windy conditions?
    • places or areas with low humidity (very dry)?
    • areas that are air conditioned? (1,2)

12 items are graded on a scale of 0–4 and the sum of scores for all questions answered is calculated.

  • 0 - none of the time
  • 1 - some of the time
  • 2 – half of the time
  • 3 – most of the time
  • 4 – all of the time

The scores range from 0 to 100. According to the final score, the patient's symptoms can be categorized as

  • normal - 0–12
  • mild dry eye -13–22
  • moderate dry eye - 23–32
  • severe dry eye - 33–100 (2)
