risk factors for acquisition of Cryptosporidium

Several risk factors for the acquisition of the infection have been identified from outbreaks and sporadic cases:

  • drinking contaminated water

  • travel to less industrialised countries

  • use of swimming pools and water based recreation

  • contact with animals in farms or petting zoos, especially young ruminants

  • contact with animal dung e.g during outdoor recreation

  • contact with another person with diarrhoea, especially a child

  • attendance at child care settings

  • changing nappies or toileting young children (even those with no diarrhoea)
