Prognosis
If patients with a microprolactinoma respond to bromocriptine, in 25% of cases after a couple of years the bromocriptine can be stopped as the hyperprolactinaemia does not recur. (1)
Even when large invasive macroadenomas or giant prolactinomas are diagnosed with chiasmal compression and bilateral temporal hemianopia, continuous treatment with relatively large doses of dopamine agonists will result in prolactin normalisation, tumour shrinkage or disappearance, and rapid visual improvement.
