Facial nerve examination
The facial nerve may be involved in many diseases of the ear.
The pattern of loss of facial nerve functions may allow the localisation of any lesion.
The patient should be examined for:
- facial weakness
- the absence of the stapedial reflex
- loss of taste from the anterior two-thirds of the tongue
- loss of tear production
