Aetiology
Possible causes of acute mediastinitis include:
- perforation of the oesophagus
- perforation of the trachea
- direct extension of infection from lung, pleura, or elsewhere above or below the diaphragm
- infection at time of opening of the chest wall, for example during cardiac surgery
