Hand infections are classified according to the area, tissue and organism involved. They include:

  • paronychia
  • subungual infections: usually extension of paronychia
  • distal pulp space infection - felon
  • cellulitis
  • osteomyelitis
  • collar stud abscess
  • tendon sheath infection
  • web space infection
  • palmar space infections: mid-palmar, thenar and hypothenar
  • penetrating injuries of hand including bite injuries
  • infection secondary to foreign body
  • radial and ulnar bursa infection
  • mycobacterial infection
  • nail infections
