Development
The superior vena cava develops from two embryological sources:
- right anterior cardinal vein: forms the portion of the SVC that is superior to the azygous vein and the right brachiocephalic vein
- the common cardinal vein: forms the section of the SVC inferior to its junction with the azygous vein
