Prophylactic chemotherapy against Pneumocystis carinii definitely delays the progression to AIDS but its effects on overall survival is unclear. When CD4 count is less than 200 cells per mm^3 or with a previous episode of Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) - then it is usual add co-trimozazole to the regimen as primary prophylaxis against Pneumocystic carinii infection (1)
Dapsone and nebulised pentamidine have been used by some patients. Once the CD4 count increases above 200 cells/μl prophylactic therapy may be discontinued.
Co-trimoxazole also gives effective protection against toxoplasmosis infections (1).
