Possible causes of localised swelling around the eyes include:

- chalazion - meibomian cysts
- sebaceous cysts
- sudorific cysts
- dermoid cysts - usually arise at the upper inner and outer angles of the orbit
- rodent ulcer - usually arise at the lid margin
- papilloma
- xanthelasma
- pinguecula
- pterygium
- lacrimal gland and lacrimal sac disorders
