Agenda
The tired patient
This session will explore the tired patient, looking at epidemiology, possible causes of fatigue, and the presentation and symptoms. The session will cover how to take a history from a tired patient, differentials and investigations in primary care, along with approaches to treatment and management.
Fibromyalgia
Here, we consider the epidemiology and pathophysiology of fibromyalgia, along with its diagnostic criteria, differential diagnoses and associated conditions. The session will cover management options, including non-drug treatments and NICE advice on fibromyalgia.
Croup
The aetiology and typical presentation of croup will be examined, along with its differential diagnoses. The session will cover investigations, how to assess croup severity, management options, when to admit a patient to hospital and the complications and prognosis of the condition.
Chronic cough in adults and children
Chronic cough is a common presentation in primary care and is associated with increased levels of anxiety and impaired quality of life. Here, we discuss in detail the differential diagnoses, the key elements to cover in the assessment and the management options. There is a special focus on protracted bacterial bronchitis in children and cough hypersensitivity in adults.
Transient loss of consciousness
In this session, we focus on the different causes of transient loss of consciousness, highlighting how to spot and manage high-risk syncopal events. We then put our skills to the test with a series of case studies.
Bacterial meningitis and meningococcal disease
Here, we review the new 2024 NICE guidelines and focus on the symptoms and signs that may indicate bacterial meningitis or meningococcal disease, and when we should give antibiotics outside of hospital.
