Causes of spinal cord compression which arise from within the spinal medulla include:

  • tumours:
    • primary - most common; usually, ependymoma, astrocytoma
    • metastatic - less common; from bronchial primary tumour or seeding from malignant intracranial tumour
  • syringomyelia
  • cyst - from degeneration of intramedullary tumour
  • intramedullary haematoma - haematomyelia
