Local treatments for breast cancer consist of surgery and radiotherapy.
Surgery may attempt to conserve the breast to some degree, involving excision of the tumour with some surrounding breast tissue. Alternatively a mastectomy may be performed and the whole breast removed.
Depending on the extent of the disease and the type of surgery performed radiotherapy may or may not be required.
