The majority of cases of chondrocalcinosis are idiopathic, as is the case for true gout.

However, the condition may be associated with:

  • hyperparathyroidism
  • haemochromotosis
  • diabetes mellitus
  • Wilson's disease
  • ochronosis
  • hypophosphataemia
  • oxalosis
  • osteoarthritis
  • gout
  • dialysis
  • long-term steroid therapy
  • acromegaly
