Insertion of a wick soaked in 10% ichthammol in glycerine is painful at the time but usually brings rapid relief.
A seven day course of antibiotics is indicated (1) - flucloxacillin if not penicillin allergic; if penicillin allergic then clarithromycin is an alternative antibiotic.
In severe cases flucloxacillin (if not penicillin allergic) should be given parenterally for 24 hrs. This is followed by oral medication.
Incision and drainage of pus if causing severe pain and swelling (1).
The patient may require pethidine in severe cases.
