With the thumb of one hand resting on the reference point of the posterior superior iliac spine, the other hand is passed caudally over the lateral edge of the iliac crest. It passes over the fleshy body of the gluteal muscles before it encounters the prominence of the greater trochanter of the hip. Its posterior edge is most prominent.
